Lee's trip- currently in Alaska is underway. He can be tracked by going to Findspot (password: alaska2008). Lee writes the following:
A good friend, Ron Browne, turned 60 this year and one of the things on his “bucket list” was a motorcycle trip through Alaska. I’ve been riding with Ron for many years and we’ve been on several extended rides. So, when he emailed and suggested this would be the year for us to get our gear together and head north (really north) it seemed like an idea whose time had come.
Ron and Carl (another friend) live in Ketchum, ID so lots of emails went back and forth as we started planning the ride. A few months of evaluating options resulted in our plan to meet in Bellingham, WA and take the Alaska ferry to Skagway, AK; tour through Alaska and then return by riding south through the Yukon, British Columbia and Alberta, then back to the U.S. through Idaho where they’ll head home and I would continue through Oregon and Nevada back the our golden state of California.
The plan was coming together when another rider, Wynne Benti, expressed her interest in the ride. So, there are four of us headed to Alaska; Wynne on her 2005 F650GS and Ron, Carl and I on 2007 R1200GS Adventures.
As part of our safety precautions, one of the new SPOT satellite messengers ( www.findmespot.com ) was acquired. It uses a satellite network to send emergency requests somewhat like a Personal Locator Beacon, but the additional features are why it was chosen instead of a PLB. The SPOT system has the capability to send “Check In” messages just to keep friends and loved ones updated on our progress. It also has a feature called “Track Progress”, sending GPS coordinates every 10 minutes which can be viewed on a personalized web page using Google Maps.
The plan is to send daily “Check-In” messages and to activate the “Track Progress” feature when we are riding through interesting areas. We’ll also send trip reports and photos when connectivity allows.
